A Day with Kyo Ichinose

Has it really been a year since we hung out with Mr. Kyo Ichinose (composer/pianist extraordinaire and also known as the man responsible for the string scores for “Landscape With A Fairy” and “Homeward Waltz”)?

Time really flies. It seems like it was yesterday that we were strolling through the crisp late autumn sunshine in Kawasaki.

The four of us (Kyo, his partner Yumito-san, Ricks and myself) decide to gather at Kinuta Park this time.

“French? Japanese?” he suggests. Me & Ricks decide that we prefer an outdoor, Japanese option – a small diner with the usual suspects on its menu like オム焼きそば、きつねうどん、おでん、you get the picture. I was drawn by the funny illustrations, and the open air seating gave us a splendid overhead view of endless trees in autumn bloom.

The busy gentleman has been preparing for a lineup of shows… Firstly, “CROSSS” with Masayoshi Fujita (a brilliant vibraphonist whom we shared the stage with at VACANT) will happen on the 14th December 2012. This time he plays with an ensemble including string players Seigen Tokuzawa and Wakako Hanada… who both also played in “A Little Fable”. It’s a terrible shame that i would be missing this show by a mere 4 days, with our departure date being the 10th.

Next he would be in Singapore to play at the M1 Fringe Festival in January. Kyo-san, you’d better be bringing along an extra stomach… we’ll be making sure you’ll be stuffed with delicious local delights..!

いい顔してるね

They always seem to be surrounded by a halo of light.

Taking us back to the station, he winds up the roof of his Volkswagen. The sun pours in generously.

See you in January my friends!

Off-topic, we stop by Tsutaya and i was delighted to be surrounded by lots and lots of classic dramas and music. 「永遠の子」 (2000) … this was a pretty unforgettable one for me as the score was by Yoshihiro Hanno, and the theme song was Sakamoto Ryuichi… Which sets me grumbling like an old lady again with the same refrain “they don’t make dramas like that anymore”….
