“With a hushed wispy voice in the spirit of Vashti Bunyan, Aspidistrafly have more in common with ambient composers like Max Richter — and, along the way, have found their own leaf-covered path.” – NPR Music

Aspidistrafly was founded in Singapore in 2001. Taking their name from George Orwell’s novel “Keep the Aspidistra Flying”, the duo was formed by sing- er-songwriter April Lee and producer-guitarist Ricks Ang. The duo play a flickeringly filmic mixture of ambient folk with gossamer-like vocal harmonies and guitar-based drone wrapped in a delicate lo-fi haziness. Best known for her distinctively smoky low alto voice, April’s lyrical storytelling and artwork form the back- bone of Aspidistrafly’s vision.

After two independently released EPs, the duo released their first album “I Hold A Wish For You’ in 2008 on Kitchen. Label, which led to their first 7-city Asia tour in 2009. In 2010, a collaboration with Haruka Nakamura on his renowned composition “twilight” was awarded “Single of the week” on iTunes Japan. In 2011 they released their second album “A Little Fable”, crafted

around compelling vocals, gentle finger picking, distorted guitars, tape loops and orchestral arrangements by Japanese composer Kyo Ichinose. Other notable collaborators include Haruka Nakamura, Seigen Tokuzawa & Akira Kosemura. The track “Landscape With A Fairy” has garnered close to 100,000 Youtube views and was featured as NPR Music’s Song Of The Day in 2012. The album was met with great success, leading to several press and publication features, brand collaborations and accompanying tours across major Asian countries including Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and many more.

Outside of Aspidistrafly, April is a Creative Director who works in fashion and user experience design. Ricks founded Kitchen. Label in 2008, which has established a solid reputation as a purveyor of ambient, modern classical and avant garde. It is currently home to Aspidistrafly and artists such as Haruka Nakamura (Japan), Ironomi (Japan), Hior Chronik (Berlin), Sonicbrat (Singapore), Hanging Up The Moon (Singapore) and many others.

Apart from touring and other artistic activities, Aspidistrafly is currently recording their 3rd full-length album.
